They say that laughter is the best medicine, but some people might endorse chocolate instead.

The dark variety has been shown to reduce blood pressure better than a placebo. Scientists credit the flavanols in dark chocolate -- they are thought to stimulate the production of nitric oxide, which helps relax the arteries so that blood can flow smoothly.

Eating Your Way to Happiness: Chocolate, Brain Metabolism, and Mood

It is becoming increasingly clear that chocolate contains several biologically active compounds, some of which have potential mind-altering properties that may explain the feelings that people have toward chocolate [1]. These compounds include: cannabinoid-like fatty acids that are structurally similar to the active molecule in marijuana (tetrahydrocannabinol); methylxanthines, including one of the most widely consumed drugs with documented addictive properties (caffeine); alkaloids including the same compounds that are found in alcohol and that are thought to be partially responsible for alcoholism (tetrahydro-beta-carbolines); and biogenic amines, including phenylethylamine, otherwise known as the “love drug” because it induces physiological and psychological effects similar to those caused by being in love. While each of these pharmacological agents is present only in small amounts, the combined effects of these compounds, together with the unique sensory properties of chocolate, might be sufficient to induce a chocolate high that triggers and reinforces chocolate cravings.

Cacao to Cocoa to Chocolate: Healthy Food?

Chocolate is derived from cocoa beans - the fruit of the cacao tree or Theobroma cacao (the latin term: food of the gods). Recent published articles demonstrate that the quality and quantity of the antioxidants in cocoa and chocolate are very high and their flavonoids are believed to reduce the number of free radicals in the body that contribute to medical problems, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer and also to offer some anti-aging health benefits. Centuries of seeking chocolate's medicinal benefits!

I love to read the history and magic that surrounds this magical bean. This is a fun article on Theobroma cacao bean in the Lancet July 2010.

"In 1753, the noted nosologist Carl Linnaeus named it Theobroma cacao—“food of the gods”. Indeed, few natural products have been purported to effectively treat such a wide variety of disorders as has chocolate. Chocolate's medicinal benefits are traceable as far back as Aztec medical practice. There, remedies concocted from the cacao beans, which had formed in the pods produced by the “Chocolate tree”, were used to soothe stomach and intestinal complaints, control childhood diarrhoea, reduce fevers, expel phlegm by provoking cough, reduce the passage of blood in stool, and promote strength before military or sexual conquests. In later eras, chocolate remedies were thought to combat emaciation, decrease “female complaints”, delay hair growth, promote kidney stone expulsion, increase production of breastmilk, prolong longevity, both encourage and prohibit sleep, clean teeth, diminish one's timidity, and prevent syphilis."

"Throughout the closing years of the 20th century, such commercial claims for chocolate's supposed health benefits were increasingly able to draw on a burgeoning scientific interest in chocolate. Research into the health effects of cocoa—some of which is supported by chocolate manufacturers—has yielded much food for thought. Studies have been done, for example, on the effect of plant-derived, saturated stearic acid fats on cholesterol concentrations; whether consumption of chocolate has an effect on the release of phenethylamine, anandamide, or serotonin; and the properties of high-quality dark chocolate, which has high concentration of the stimulant theobromine and is also rich in flavanols. Indeed, some small studies have shown increased concentrations of a particular flavonoid, epicatechin, after chocolate consumption—a substance that promotes antioxidant activity which, in turn, decreases the activity of low-density lipoproteins. Such findings are welcomed by chocolate manufacturers, the medical community, the media, and consumers alike. Controversy remains over the extent to which, despite caloric concerns, chocolate's beneficial ingredients effectively delay atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis, inhibit blood platelet activity, stimulate blood flow, and reduce blood pressure. Still, investigators strive to ascertain whether this one-time snack may also be one of nature's greatest restorative and curative medicinal agents."

Search for Flavanol Rich Cacao: Simple - Sacred Chocolate

"Dietary intake of a specific subclass of flavonoids known as flavanols has attracted increasing interest as a result of recent epidemiological mechanistic and human intervention studies suggesting potential beneficial cardiovascular effects. Among the wide variety of dietary flavanol sources, including apples, cranberries, purple grapes, red wine, and tea, some cocoas and chocolates can be extraordinarily rich in certain types of flavanols." 1

Manufacturers of regular chocolate have conducted hundreds of studies to figure out how to manufacture chocolate while preserving the flavanols. It seems that they have missed the simple obvious answer that lies in fact that the heat and processing destroys these delicate elements. Even after extensive research the simple cacao bean beats their patented chocolate product. The fresh chocolate bean contains 9776 mg of favanols per 100 grams while their special cocoa powder only contains 4784 mg/ 100 grams.1

The basic sub-units of the flavanols are epicatechin and catechin. "Catechin(Pronunciation: /ˈka-tə-ˌkin/) is a polyphenolic antioxidant plant secondary metabolite. The term catechins is also commonly used to refer to the related family of flavonoids and the subgroup flavan-3-ols (or simply flavanols)."2 "

"Many studies on health benefits have been linked to the catechin content.According to Norman Hollenberg, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, epicatechin can reduce the risk of four of the major health problems: stroke, heart failure, cancer and diabetes. He studied the Kuna people in Panama, who drink up to 40 cups of cocoa a week, and found that the prevalence of the “big four” is less than 10%. He believes that epicatechin should be considered essential to the diet and thus classed as a vitamin." 5

In 2007 Sacred Chocolate analyzed the Sacred Chocolate Ginger an found 134,000 mcg/ 100 grams of Epicatechin which in unheard of in processed chocolate.3 The low temperature stone grinding of Sacred Foods Sacred Chocolate creates a magical alchemy that actually makes the nutrients more available without any damage or loss and in fact makes the nutrients more bio available.4
